Every novice survivalist should learn the basic rules for setting up camp in the woods. What should be done to make camping as safe as possible? Here are some useful tips!
How to camp in the forest?
You should never set up camp on a forest path or in a place where there are clearly visible traces of predators, such as bone and feather fragments or blood. You should also first make sure that there is not an anthill or a beehive nearby. There should not be a dry or decayed tree just above the camp. Additionally, the camp should not be set up too close to water. This way we will not disturb animals using the watering hole and effectively reduce the risk of being washed away. It is worth realizing that in the immediate vicinity of water reservoirs there is more humidity in the air, and thus – the perceived temperature is lower.
If it is possible, it is worth to decide to camp on an elevation. If rain breaks up during the night, water will not flood the shelter. The exit from the tent or shelter should be on the eastern side. This is a proven way to protect yourself from the rays of the rising sun.
If you suspect that dangerous animals, such as bears, are present in the area where you set up camp, it is worth making an early warning system around it. To do this, stretch a string, attaching rocks or dishes to it, so that when you move the string, the accessories attached to it will make a sound and attract our attention.
Key points of a camp in the forest
We have chosen a place to camp – and what next? The first thing to do is to clean the dirty equipment. For this purpose it is best to use water, and if you do not have such an opportunity – leaves. Attention: dishes should be washed with water mixed with sand or ash. Additionally, it is worth washing sweaty, dirty clothes. If you do not have water, air them and dry over a fire or expose to the sun. This is a proven way to get rid of bacteria from their surface.
At this stage it is also a good idea to inspect the whole body thoroughly and check for corns or ticks. If we have access to a body of water, we can bathe. It is very important never to bathe in the same place and draw water for drinking or preparing meals. When we camp by a river, the water should be drawn a little higher than the place where we wash our equipment and our bodies. This way we will not collect our own dirt carried by the river along with the current.
After performing all the above mentioned activities, you can move on to the meal. A special issue here is to properly protect it from ants, bees, worms or slightly larger animals. It is best not to keep the food directly in the camp, but nearby, for example in a bag hung on a string on a high branch.
How to make camping easier during a longer trip taking place in a larger group? The first thing you need to do is to get a camping stove. What else should be kept in mind when setting up camp in the forest? If several people participate in the expedition, it is worth setting up a guard that will be responsible for watching over the camp and keeping the fire burning.
When camping in the forest, remember to interfere as little as possible with the surrounding nature. When leaving an area, leave it as you found it, taking all trash with you.
