How not to starve to death – food in survival

Wilderness camping requires proper preparation. One of the several key issues to pay special attention to is food. What foods work best for a survival trip?

Adjust the menu to your possibilities

Food during a survival trip must be functional first and foremost. This means that the food should fit the technical parameters of the trip, the weather, the conditions, and the time you can spend preparing the meal. The easiest form of food to prepare during survival is food poured over boiling water. It allows you to eat to your heart’s content and provide your body with essential nutrients. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to boil water during every survival trip. In practice this may mean that for a few days spent on a survival trip you will not be able to eat a hot meal. True, you can prepare some meals over a fire, but they should be vegetarian, as fresh meat can spoil quickly in high temperatures.

Take advantage of simple snacks

A few of the most popular and favorite snacks will work great not only for a day trip, but also for a multi-day survival trip. Eating snacks does not have to mean an unhealthy way of eating, caloric sweets or unhealthy highly processed foods. Meat chips, kabanos sausages, or dried beef will work well as nutritious yet healthy snacks. Those on a vegetarian diet can take advantage of fruit stocks and fresh vegetables.

The list of snacks ideal for survival time should also include nuts, nuts, dried fruit, whole grain muesli-based products, energy foods (gels, bars, mousses), protein bars, or cereal cakes. Products should be in small packages so they can easily fit in a backpack or pocket. These types of snacks are resistant to high temperatures and adverse weather conditions at night. They will work well as a quick meal during the day.

We love such food. A nice change from canned food 😉
What are your preferences: do you prepare with fresh products…

Remember about the drinks!

When preparing for a survival trip, you can’t forget to hydrate properly. During the summer season, frequent drinking of various beverages is crucial for proper body function and well-being. Drinking water is basic. A filled metal bottle works best in field conditions, but recently a bottle with a filter, which can be filled with tap water, is becoming more and more popular. You can add effervescent tablets to your water, which contain essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins. There are many specifics, so it is worth testing several remedies before the trip and choosing the ideal one for your needs. Electrolytes and isotonic drinks also work well during a survival expedition as a drink. Full-flavored drinks provide the body with the necessary energy and nutrients. Drinking alcohol is not recommended during survival, especially on hot days.

Freeze-dried food

Freeze-dried food is the best option for people who are able to boil water during a survival trip. Thanks to a special technique previously frozen food is dehydrated. The freeze-drying process reduces the volume of the meal, while retaining up to 90% of the nutritional value of the food. The meal should be poured into boiling water and wait a few minutes before eating. In the market, especially in sports equipment stores, you can buy many meals from the freeze-dried food section. There’s something for every traveler out there, from favorites to new flavors from cuisines around the world. The cost of one package, depending on the manufacturer, is about 30 PLN and allows you to store without a refrigerator for up to a dozen days.
